2022 DJ Tengdin

It was a perfect day for the DJ Tengdin memorial race at Buck Hill; the only outdoor three run FIS ENL in the known galaxy. Congratulations to this year’s podium winners. In third place Grace Torgeson and Jack Lindsay, in second place Penny Robinson and Will Uttendorfer, and this year’s champions Sophie Robinson and Josh Nelson. BRAVO!

To the DJ Tengdin Foundation Trustees,
I’m honored to recommend Ms. Sophia Wenberg (U12), for the Buck Hill Ski Team DJ Tengdin Scholarship, for the 2022/23 ski racing season. I’ve been associated with Sophia for more than three years as a family friend and as an avid follower of Sophia’s academic, athletic and personal development. As a retired medical doctor, former Ivy league collegiate athlete and former contributing columnist for Ski Racing International Magazine, to say I’m impressed with Sophia and her pursuits is an understatement.
Personally, I believe a scholarship of any type should go to one who is empathetic, possesses strong leadership qualities and has a genuine concern for their community. Sophia fits these guidelines perfectly. A 5th grader at the Twin Cities German Immersion School (TCGIS), Sophia has distinguished herself as a leader both academically and athletically. Sophia has maintained 4.0 GPA since her first day of attendance. She routinely seeks to academically challenge herself, through extracurricular activities and advanced studies. Sophia is well beyond her grade level, particularly in mathematics, German language and reading. On occasion, Sophia volunteers as a mathematics and German language tutor to fellow classmates. As an avid reader, in German, English and Slovak language, Sophia has entered school wide reading contests with extraordinary results. Additionally, Sophia has been asked to take the lead role in school plays, not only because of her German language ability, but also because of her ability to lead her fellow classmates. Athletically, at TCGIS, Sophia distinguishes herself as a standout volleyball player. She’s extremely competitive and grasps athletic concepts quickly while being decisive and directive.
Outside the classroom, Sophia displays advanced skills in the arts, community service and athletics. Sophia is a member of the Czech/Slovak folk dance group called the Tanezne Mladez dancers. This group dances at Czech/Slovak dance festivals throughout the Twin Cities. Sophia has studied piano for four years. Her piano teacher (Herr Englemeyer) teaches her in German. Sophia has distinguished herself in the community as a volunteer with St Paul Meals on Wheels program, delivering meals to the less fortunate. Athletically, Sophia plays softball in the Highland Ball Majors. Sophia is also a superb figure skater with the St Paul figure skating club (SPFSC). She skated in the SPFSC family ice show as late as, 9 April. Finally, I can get to her first love, the BHSRT. Ski racing is her passion. She’s incredibly competitive in this discipline with goals that go well beyond the high school and collegiate level. As a dual citizen (US/Slovakia), Sophia’s more than once commented “I’m going to be better than Slovak World Cup racer Petra Vlhova.”
I am certain, Sophia will continue to do tremendous things in her future. I am proud to extend this scholarship recommendation for this talented and extraordinary young lady. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding Sophia’s application.
    Regards,

    Peter J. Dorsen, M.D., LDAC
